The Senior Material Engineer will be working for Meggitt Polymers & Composites (MPC) at our Loughborough site. This is an exciting time to join MPC as we have had rapid expansion of this division with the acquisition of the advanced composites businesses of EDAC and Cobham PLC, Meggitt Polymers & Composites will be managed through three customer-facing ‘value streams’. These are dedicated to achieving the greatest possible intimacy with our customers, solving problems today with our enriched engineering function and preparing for tomorrow by aligning our applied research and technology (AR&T) investments closely with their technology roadmaps.


Purpose

 

To provide material expertise in the selection and utilisation of non-metallic materials. To organise and over-see material and component testing. Support the manufacturing department through coupon quality control, process and failure investigations.

Specific responsibilities

 

  • Provide hands on or theoretical technical expertise, analysis and consultancy in the resolution of hardware problems and investigations either in development or manufacture
  • Generate material test campaigns in accordance with the civil and military certification requirements
  • Support AR&T programmes providing technical guidance on all material related issues
  • Participate in DFMEAs and PFMEAs 
  • Primary working relationships & interfaces: Interfacing with other design departments, production engineering, manufacturing and the customer.

 


Key skills and competencies required

Essential

  • Knowledge of non-metallic materials used in the aerospace industry
  • Knowledge of composite manufacturing techniques
  • Generation of material characterisation test plans to generate design data in accordance with civil and military certification requirements
  • Selection, oversight and management of external sub-contractors where required to support testing activity
  • Technical liaison/presentations with customer to support Design Review deliverables
  • Good communication and team working skills
  •  

 

Preferred

  • Knowledge of aerospace metallic materials, heat treatments, surface treatments etc 
  • Knowledge of pre-preg, RTM, resin infusion manufacturing techniques
  • Knowledge of composite testing procedures (ASTM, BS EN etc)
  • Experience of 3D CAD software (CATIA)
  • Excellent report writing skills
  • Experience in Laboratory environment - mechanical testing, DMA and DSC
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office

Desired Qualifications / Experience

  • Qualified to degree level or equivalent in Material Science
  • Composite experience in the aerospace / automotive industry
