Job Designation

The Materials Engineer Specialist acts as a key contributor on the Applied Research & Technology team and professionally leads a variety of complex activities. In this position, the individual will perform new product introductions, optimization of existing products and processes, and make complex observations, analyses and interpretations of data for financial results. In addition, the Materials Engineer Specialist will provide significant expertise on complex material issues used in the Manufacturing and Production processes, and when needed, will develop materials specifically designed to endure and perform in unique environments for new and existing products per the Customer’s specifications.       

Job Core Responsibilities

The primary duties in this job require analysis, interpretation or deductions from facts using available information and data. Requirements involve the comparison and the evaluation of results or solutions after considering various possibilities and making recommendations and/or decisions accordingly using professional judgment. Consistent exercise of independent judgment and discretion in matters of significance.  Additionally, will:
•    Act as a key contributor on the Applied Research & Technology team.
•    Perform as a technical leader in the development of comprehensive technical services across the business and support the process of new business development.
•    Provide accurate and timely evaluation of the cost structure for new business opportunities and proposed technical solutions.
•    Participate in the material selection process, ensuring alignment with component specification requirements. 
•    Use their expertise in providing complex technical support for new projects including the evaluation of new materials and processes.
•    Provide expertise in supporting manufacturing through process development and fault investigation.
•    Compile material and process specifications and technical report.
•    Reduce costs and improve material processes utilizing best practices and professional knowledge.
•    Partner with internal departments and make recommendations relating to material and processing issues.
•    Act as a resource for colleagues, providing knowledge and a range of expertise.
•    Maintain project files and appropriate records of work.
•    Other responsibilities as assigned.

Job Specifications

Education:  Bachelor Degree in Chemistry, Materials Engineering, or Material Science; Master degree or Ph.D. a plus
Years’ Experience: Minimum of 10 years of materials engineering experience
•    Demonstrated expertise from previous experience with complex materials engineering solutions
•    Able to anticipate internal or external business challenges/regulatory issues and recommend solutions
•    Demonstrated use of the latest technology to enhance the growth of an organization
•    Solid analytical skills and judgment to proactively identify and solve increasingly complex problems
•    Advanced knowledge of elastomer-based materials and processes, manufacturing processes and obsolescence management
•    Ability to improve products or services by applying professional and business knowledge
•    Experience in working with a development team in creating a material for a particular need     
•    Knowledge of regulations such as REACH, NESHAP, etc.
•    Able to solve complex problems and make decisions based on the analysis of multiple sources of information to drive task to completion
•    Effective interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
•    Basic understanding of Project Management
•    Basic understanding and utilization of Root Cause and Corrective Action processes and tools 
•    Familiarity with instrumentation for material analysis
