Drafter/Designer Specialist

Job Designation

This position reports to the Section Manager and coordinates with the Project Engineer and other product Engineering personnel and Manufacturing Engineering personnel involved in the same project. There are no subordinates reporting to this position. The designer drafter creates finished drawings in connection with design assignments and makes necessary calculations to complete the drawings with minimum supervision. The product responsibilities vary with the project assignment.

    Education/Skills and Traning

    This position requires an Associate Degree  in Engineering or Drafting Technology, or two years college level training in engineering, including mechanical drawing, or the equivalent, however acquired. The incumbent must have working knowledge of engineering mathematics, strength of materials and manufacturing processes.  A minimum of six years drafting design experience is required. Must be familiar with Government Specifications, and accepted industrial drawing standards. Shop experience would be helpful. The incumbent must be capable of clearly communicating with other company personnel and with outside vendors and willing to travel to vendors facilities on an as needed basis.



    • Advanced working knowledge of general drafting principles
    • Advanced working knowledge of machine and metal shop practices
    • Ability to understand and follow specific instructions and procedures
    • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and drawings
    • Ability to research and analyze data effectively, gather data, compile information, and prepare reports
    • Strong computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook, SAP, and web-browsers
    • Skilled with CATIA/ENOVA
    • Experience with NX/Solidworks A Plus
    • Advanced knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
    • Proficient in CATIA V5, secondary in CATIA V6 and NX/Unigraphics, understanding of ENOVIA
    • Good/Strong/Excellence verbal and written communication skills

    Job Specifications
    • Applies specialized technical skills in creating fully developed, error-free product models and using 3-D CAD systems/CATIA. Engages in complex problem solving, design, analysis, consultation, and related support activities in pursuit of new or improved company products and procedures. Estimates time required for design and drafting jobs. Attends design reviews and provides input on Engineering Change Notices.
    • Reviews and verifies the design work of other designers and engineers to ensure technical correctness and accuracy in fit, form, and function.
    • Liaises closely with Engineering, Manufacturing, Procurement, and Quality Assurance through the product development cycle to ensure technical requirements and schedule are met. Works directly with engineers, technicians, and new product development team to resolve design issues.
    • Represents the organization in significant specialized technical matters. Provide interface and coordination with senior technical personnel of other companies, customers, and/or supplier organizations.
    • Trains less experience personnel in regards to design/documentation issues and CAD training. Provides CAD guidance to engineer personnel.
