Job Designation

The RM&S engineer is responsible for planning the RM&S activities and defining the associated requirements for a system development program (for example an aircraft’s brake control system) to ensure that the design is in line with the regulatory standards. To a large extent this work is related to ARP4761 requirements.

Working within an engineering project team to influence the system/LRUs design through the performance of the RM&S analyses and liaising with the Systems team for the validation, implementation & verification of the RM&S requirements. 

RM&S engineers evaluate the reliability, maintainability and safety aspects of the design through analytical analyses that may include parts-count reliability predictions, bottom-up techniques such as Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and top-down evaluations such as Fault Tree Analysis (FTA).

 

Job Core Responsibilities

  • Performance of safety assessment activities associated with the role to achieve the timely substantiation of the designs.
  • Provide technical leadership and oversee, review and approve analyses and assessments performed by suppliers and work-share partners.
  • Support the development and production of standards and processes for the management of reliability and safety to ensure that the future development of MABS objectives and activities are appropriately aligned and acceptable.
  • Provide a source of expertise and advice to other members of the RM&S Team and Project Teams in relation to project safety and reliability matters.

Provide technical expertise in safety and reliability engineering with an in-depth knowledge and experience of fault analysis techniques, processes and tools emphasizing the following analyses and reports:

  • Working to ARP4761
  • Reliability Predictions
  • Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA)
  • Failure Modes and Effects Summary (FMES)
  • Fault Tree Analysis (FTA)
  • Common Mode Analysis (CMA)
  • Preliminary System Safety Assessment (PSSA)
  • System Safety Assessment (SSA)
  • Maintainability and MSG-3 Analyses

In addition to the specific RM&S analyses and reports identified above, the following responsibilities may also be assigned:

  • Development of processes and procedures to support the RM&S roadmap
  • Derivation of Safety Requirements in System/HW/SW Specifications
  • Participate in ARP4754A related audits, design reviews and Systems Engineering peer reviews
  • Partake in Change Control Board as RM&S representative
  • Provide Project Teams with expert safety and reliability advice throughout the development phase and at key milestones such as design reviews.

Job Specifications

Education:  Post-secondary degree in Engineering or equivalent combination of relevant education and work experience that will allow successful performance of job expectations.

Years of Experience: 5 - 10 years of relevant experience

Essential Skills:  

  • In-depth RM&S experience and knowledge at System and LRU level.
  • Electronics understanding (e.g. electronics by training)
  • Good knowledge of complex electronic systems and the associated safety and reliability issues.
  • Experience in carrying out safety and reliability analyses such as Reliability Predictions, Functional and Piece Part FMEA, FTA, CMA.
  • Planning, Delivering and managing work packages throughout the system development lifecycle and consolidating into a system safety assessment (PSSA, SSA)
  • Providing reliability predictions through appropriate analysis
  • Plan and develop reliability growth and validation activities to meet all reliability requirements
  • Provide cost and schedule estimates on compliated engineering programs.
  • Must be able to work in close liaison with customers, suppliers and work-share partners.
  • Interfacing with third party certification bodies.
  • Good general IT skills and proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Knowledge of safety approval processes and regulatory requirements and experience of delivering against these.

Desirable Skills:

  • Brake Control System architectural understanding
  • Familiarity with tools such as CAFTA, PTC Windchill, Relex and DOORS
  • Knowledge of software and hardware development practices and design assurance methods (DO178, DO254)
  • Working knowledge of ARP4754A
  • Strong understanding of Engineering fundamentals
  • Be able to demonstrate the ability to use technical knowledge in the support of other departments (engineering, production, procurement, projects) and the development of less experienced engineering
