Role Summary

The Head of Manufacturing Engineering role is a pivotal role that provides a critical bridge between the design and production/manufacturing teams.  The successful candidate will manage and coordinate the activities of the manufacturing engineering group through extensive interaction with multi-department teams, in support of manufacturing operations, new product introductions, and achieving long-term corporate goals.  #LI-SJ1

Core Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the Design Engineering team at early stages of development cycle to ensure design for manufacture principles are considered and embedded in the NPI design process.
  • Oversee the transferring of new products into production. This includes making sure the designs can be manufactured and have acceptable production yields.
  • Work with cross functional teams to make product improvements for increased efficiency and customer satisfaction.
  • Confer with Programmes, Design Engineering, Operations, Sales and Commercial to determine engineering feasibility, cost effectiveness, and customer demand for new and existing products.
  • Develop improved processes and tooling to reduce labour time and costs.
  • Make engineering and procedural changes to improve production yields, improve manufacturability, reduce lead time and reduce quality problems.
  • Work with Procurement to find additional sources for difficult or obsolete materials, resolve problems with suppliers, and solve quality problems. Work with Procurement to reduce material costs; assess and qualify vendors.
  • Oversee technical and professional development of the Manufacturing Engineering team.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of new technologies, which may improve operations, and develop recommendations accordingly.

Skills, Abilities & Experience

 

  • Experience within aerospace & defence sector is essential
  • leadership and management skills to enable the creation of a highly capable and sustainable function
  • Experience leading Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or other continuous improvement processes
  • Experience of leading production engineering and design teams within a manufacturing environment
  • Ability to anticipate internal or external business challenges/regulatory issues and make recommendations
  • High level of ethical behavior in exercising judgment and discretion in matters of significance
  • Ability to negotiate well with others
  • Ability to explain a range of complex technical information
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills with ability to negotiate and influence, while exercising sensitivity to audience
  • Registered CEng & Membership of Professional Institution preferred
