Job Designation

The Director of Quality Assurance is the site champion for the Quality Management System, responsible for the design, maintenance and continued certifications of the QMS to appropriate contract and industry requirements.  The primary objective is to eliminate risk of escapement of defective parts and to team with engineering and other resources to reduce all non-conformances by continually improving process capability.  The position is responsible for the identification of appropriate inspection methods and plan for the resources required.  The position will lead and direct Quality Engineers and Inspectors to accomplish these objectives.  The Director of Quality is a member of the Senior Leadership Counsel and is based in San Diego, CA.

Job Core Responsibilities
  • Develop and administer the company Quality Management System as required to maintain qualification, ensure compliance and/or certification to customer and industry standards
  • Identifies staffing and training needs, (including succession planning) in support of company objectives.
  • Write, review, and/or approve Material and Process specifications
  • Manage and direct the activities of inspectors and the quality engineering department to ensure consistency and compliance with customer requirements and company procedures and methods
  • Supports organizational initiative such related to Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement activities
  • Manage internal audit, corrective action and process improvement programs along with establishing effective corrective action.
  • Responsible for the creation, compliance and maintenance of the Quality Assurance Manual and procedures in accordance with ISO 9001:2000, AS9100 standards
  • Responsible for managing data associated with the non-conformance tracking and associated analysis and reports.
  • Provide information for the development of proposals including capability assessment and cost estimates. 
  • Prepares and manages forecasts on test equipment and asset justification (CAR)
  • Oversees non-conforming material handling and disposition of material
  • Support concurrent engineering efforts by participating in design development projects (PDR, CDR, CCB) representing Quality Assurance and the customer
  • Reviews outgoing purchase orders for the inclusion of quality assurance provisions
  • Reviews and approves work instructions as needed
  • Participates in Federal Aviation Administration activities including: Repair Station, Parts Manufacturing Approvals and Supplemental Type Certificate functions
  • Manage the process for qualifying potential suppliers and auditing applicable suppliers.  Support Supply Chain in ensuring suppliers comply and correct deficiencies
  • Review Qualification Test Plans, Inspection Plans and other associated planning
  • Main point of contact for the FAA’s MIDO, FSDO and Europe’s EASA for the Company FAA Repair Station
  • Oversees the creation, modification and enforcement of FAA approved quality procedures through strong working knowledge of the applicable FARs and FAA Orders
  • Ensure on time response to internal and external customers.
Job Specifications
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred (Engineering related)
  • 10+ years of experience in Quality Engineering and manufacturing (aerospace or automotive manufacturing preferred).
  • Team oriented with a continuous improvement outlook
  • Ability to engage and interact with customers and other stakeholders
  • AS9100 expertise
  • Lean and Continuous Improvement experience (Black Belt or other industry certifications preferred)
  • Communicate information and ideas clearly, and concisely, both verbally and in writing; read and listen effectively
  • Consistently operate in a collaborative manner in all settings – including with operators
  • Change Management, demonstrated ability to drive controlled change within a structured QMS
  • Ability to multi-task and manage multiple priorities in a timely and efficient manner and anticipate critical deadlines in a high volume setting.
  • Strong analytical and communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Ability to drive relentless root cause analyses
  • Extensive knowledge of Aerospace and government procurement Quality requirements
  • Basic working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook)
