Job Designation

Tool Deisigner - Design complex tools (dies, jigs, gauges, fixtures, etc.) to build a quality product within the cost requirements for all Braking Systems production plants. This means designing around the best way to build, inspect and the usage of the tool.  Reports to the Structural Manufacturing Manager.         

 Nature and Scope      
This position reports to the Manufacturing Manager. There are no subordinates reporting to this position. Incumbent performs duties with minimum supervision and designs may or may not be checked.

The incumbent has frequent contact with the other groups within the Manufacturing Services organization and with Product Engineering, Stress Engineering, Quality Assurance, Tool Inspection, Tool and Die Build, and Production Personnel and Supervision. There is occasional contact with Estimating, Factory Operation Analysis, Plant Engineering, Procurement, and Manufacturing Test Equipment.

The incumbent will make engineering layouts, design and detail all tools listed in Standard Practice Bulletin 8070 Rev. b Section 5.0. Suggestions for the product ability of Quality Parts found in making this tool layout will be brought to the tool planner’s attention. The incumbent will stay informed of any new products or processes available to aid in the design or build of the tools or product. All necessary design calculations will be done by the Senior Tool Designer, checked and approved by the proper authority. The incumbent is responsible to check the work of his peers. The incumbent will be required to work computer aided design with more experience.

This position is primarily technical but on occasions, will involve guiding the tool builder or tool inspector. The incumbent plays a major role in determining the productivity of the tooling and manufacturing operations for the parts he/she is involved with.

       

                                                           

Job Core Responsibilities

•    Accountable for effective organization and execution of assigned work to meet schedule, quality and cost objectives.

  • Design of economical, accurate, full proof tooling to produce quality parts efficiently.
  • Updating of company and departmental standards for cutting tools and standard designs.
  • Stay informed of any new products or processes available to aide in the design or build of the tools or product.
  • Create Engineering layouts, design and detail all tools listed in Standard Practice Bulletin 8070 rev. B Section 5.0.
  • Manage the storing, calibration, and repair of existing tooling onsite.
  • Occasionally guiding the tool builder or tool inspector, playing a key role in determining the productivity of the tooling and manufacturing operations for the parts he/she is involved with.
  • Occasional contact with Estimating, Factory Operations Analysis, Plant Engineering, Procurement and Manufacturing Test Equipment.

 

Job Specifications

Education Level:

  • Associate degree preferred but not required in either Mechanical Engineering or Tool Design.

      
 *Prior work experience in the field including 2 – 4 years of (GD&T) Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerance with computer aided drafting is preferred. Machine shop apprenticeship or trade school or college training can also be considered.

 

 


Field of Study/Area of Experience 
2-4 years of experience in tool and die.


Skills, Knowledge and Abilities List 

•    Technical skills, with the ability to troubleshoot mechanical problems.  
•    Mathematical skills, with the ability to add, subtract and multiply, arithmetic, geometry
•    Ability to read and interpret blueprints and sketches.
•    Good verbal communication skills. 
•    Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods.
•    Ability to operate machines and precision measurement devices
•    Knowledge of tool design and understanding of fit and function of mold components
