Role Summary

The Manager, Software Engineering will lead and grow Meggitt’s central software engineering team delivering safety-critical embedded software to business unit programmes.  This includes building and leading small project teams to deliver multiple, high-value software projects whilst building excellent relations with engineering departments across Meggitt’s business units in order to continue consolidation of software engineering capability in this central team.

Core Responsibilities

  • Manage the software team with responsibility for the schedule and cost of software deliverables to business unit programmes including scope definition and change management
  • Work closely with the Principal Software Engineer and software design leads to develop work packages from analysis of requirements, work share agreements and internal constraints
  • Monitor project performance with appropriate targets and KPIs andchair meetings on project progress and drumbeat project reporting to stakeholders (financial, resource and task progress reporting)
  • Manage the risk process, identifying, articulating and managing the risks associated with the successful achievement of projects
  • Establish and maintain excellent relations with engineering departments across Meggitt’s business units.  Manage the relationship with the offshore verification team, ensuring delivery to cost and schedule
  • Coach and mentor the team in programme and project management tools and techniques
  • Encourage best practice sharing and continuous improvement initiatives throughout the software life cycle development
  • Understand and champion the central software engineering methodology

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Hands-on aerospace software technical leadership, adept in leading reviews of software design, architecture and implementation, planning, resource management and other management topics
  • Experience in the development of safety critical embedded software
  • Knowledge of DO-178C, DO-330 and DO-331 and and completion of software certification audits with FAA, EASA and aerospace customers
  • Continuous improvement mind set; challenge the ways of working and relentlessly eliminate waste.
  • Strong, proven experience with programme and project management tools and techniques
  • Experience in building, coaching and managing small teams including delegating responsibility, training and evaluating performance
  • Demonstrable ability to deliver cost effective improvement to projects in the aerospace or high technology sectors using Lean / 6Sigma techniques
  • Experience in deployment and use of software engineering tools and export-controlled technology in a multi-site, multi-national corporate environment
